How Beard and Moustache Transplant Works
Beard and mustache transplant is performed with hair follicles extracted from the nape, neck or certain parts of the beard. The hair follicles harvested in the channels should be placed to the direction that the hair grows, just like in hair transplant, in order to get good results from the procedure.
This procedure is usually recommended for men over the age of 24. The patient’s general state of health and medical history will be taken into account. A detailed examination will be carried out in the area where the procedure will be performed. Both the mustache and the beard area will be examined. The areas where there is shedding of facial hair, possible causes of shedding, how many hair follicles will be needed and from which area they will be extracted will be determined.
The number of grafts to be extracted will be determined by factors such as the person’s preferences, facial structure, and whether his facial hair grows or not. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.
Which Technique is Used for Beard and Moustache Transplantation?
FUE technique is usually preferred in beard and mustache transplantation. Grafts extracted one by one will be kept in a special solution. Channels are opened to harvest hair follicles before the grafts are implanted in the beard and mustache areas. The number of channels will be opened according to how many grafts will be used.
Then the hair follicles are placed in these channels individually. The doctor should take into account the direction of growth of the beard and mustache during transplantation in order to have a successful result. While 300 to 500 follicles are usually sufficient for the mustache, an average of 1000 to 3000 follicles are used for the beard.
Beard and mustache transplantation takes a short time to give results. All of the transplanted mustache and beard fall out within a few weeks. You don’t need to worry, because the actual growth of healthy facial hair will take place from the fourth month. You will see the final result in 6 months after the procedure.
Points to Consider After the Operation
We recommend not wearing any clothes that will cause friction on the next day of beard and mustache transplant. Make sure that you lie on your back on the first day. Do not bandage the beard and mustache area, because your facial hair may stick to the bandage. Do not wash your face for 48 to 72 hours after the procedure. Wash your face with the cleaning products recommended by your doctor against the risk of infection.
Do not rub your face, but be gentle when you wash your face for the first time. We recommend that you do not shave until 12 days after the procedure to make sure that the follicles are intact. You can shave with a razor or an electric shaver 12 days after the procedure.
